People use car parks for many purposes. So yes the low price concession I am sure will be attracting some additional parking from non-shoppers. It's acknowledged that the High Street roadworks has caused some disruption to shoppers and motorists. This inevitably has the real potential to harm business.
However I am working with Pershore Chamber of Trade and many individual traders and I am getting a clear mssage that the parking concession is working and it is helping them to retain business. It seems clear to me that on the whole Pershore is not the ghost town that some people predicted.
Looking to the future we need to ensure that awareness of the concession and the access to a wide range of quality shops and services is known to a wider public (especially shoppers) and we are therefore going to be advertising extensively over the next few weeks - with support from Pershore Chamber of Trade.
Whilst understanding the challenges, let's all get behind the town and it's traders and look to the real positive and not just the negative.

It is a shame that the extra use of the car park in Pershore on the concession days is not down to shoppers, but people who work in Pershore taking advantage.

I know the council may well argue, but we have proof that this is the case. Proof being that local traders have admitted using the car park for parking mid week and also the fact that it is possible for residents to park on Church Street during those days, even if they have gone out during the day, they are able to park when they return, which is not the case on the other days when car park charges are normal.

Just counting the number of tickets issued does not mean that more shoppers are using Pershore because of the reduced parking charge, it just means more local people are using the facility instead of parking around the estates and walking in from there - it gives them a little extra time in bed of a morning!

We do not have a statutory duty to provide sandbags. However, in the event of heavy rainfall with a possibility of imminent flooding, we look to provide assistance to householders through making full sandbags available.

The amount is restricted to a maximum of six per household to enable a fair distribution to those properties at risk. If more are needed, then residents can call Client Services on 01386 565018 or email: client.services@wychavon.gov.uk

Alternatively empty sandbags can be collected from our Community Contact Centres at:

• High Street, Droitwich Spa
• Abbey Road, Evesham
• The Civic Centre, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Pershore

Sandbags can then be filled by purchasing sand at your local builders merchants.

Filled sandbags will be delivered to OAP's and disabled householders where there is an imminent risk of flooding. Please call Client Services on 01386 565018 or email: client.services@wychavon.gov.uk if you require assistance.

Please bear with us, as we are extremely busy!

Comment on Democracy Day – don’t be scared! by wychavon

Democracy Day is big success

Democracy Day 2007 on 31st October was a huge success. The event was jointly organised by Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire County Council. It gave young people the opportunity to say on their area and what they would do if they ran the Council.

All four High Schools in Wychavon attended and a great time was had by all.

Robin Mace, Outreach Officer from Wychavon said "The day was a big success and all the students had a fantastic time. They enjoyed meeting the Councillor's and were amazed at the variety of career opportunities on offer at councils. They came up with some great ideas on how they would improve the area - most importantly how we can provide more youth activities and get them more involved in our work."

Students ideas for new activities were:

-- A temporary ice rink
-- More cycle lanes
-- Rewards for good recyclers
-- A youth bus – providing roving activities throughout the district

These ideas will be taken forward and explored by Wychavon – we will update you on progress in the future.

Students visited the Council Headquarters, meet Officers and Councillors and found out more about the day-to-day work that goes on.

The events for the day were fun and fast-paced:

-- Political Speed Dating – students had three minutes to chat to Councillors and ask them questions. They had scorecards so that they can award them marks on their answers.

-- Guess the Occupation Quiz – students met ten Officers from the District and County Councils and have a few minutes to chat to them and guess their occupation.
